Live Tales Volunteers Frequently Asked Questions

Live Tales is Live Theatre’s new creative writing centre for children and young people and will open in September 2016. School and community groups will be able to visit the centre to take part in a range of exciting activities to develop imagination, creativity and writing progression.

All Live Tales creative writing programmes are supported by teams of volunteers – people just like you.  We are looking for volunteers to help by becoming writing mentors or illustrators.  The sessions will take place in Live Theatre's new centre located just behind Live Theatre,  on Newcastle's Quayside, on Thursday and Friday mornings with one primary school class of approximately 30 pupils at a time.  No previous experience is necessary.

What kind of people volunteer at Live Tales?

Everyone.  We have lots of volunteer writing mentors - people from all walks of life - including students, retired people, parents, teachers, artists and anyone who has spare time.

What kind of skills do I need to volunteer at Live Tales?

Anyone who enjoys working in a creative environment with children and young people - and is a good listener - is welcome to volunteer.  You don't need to be a writer or a teacher to be a Live Tales volunteer writing mentor.

What kind of commitment do I have to give?

Volunteering with Live Tales is totally flexible.  Volunteers can choose the days and times they come in using our online calendar.  You simply click on the day you'd like to come in and sign up.  There is no minimum commitment.

What is involved when I sign up?

The total volunteering time for each session is 3 hours.  The pupils will take part in a workshop which is typically 2 hours long, which is divided into two parts: group work and individual writing time.  During the first half, you may also be asked to help in other ways by meeting and greeting the school, hanging up coats or giving name badges to the pupils.  In the second half, you will work with 3 to 4 pupils as they work on their individual creative writing, providing help and lots of encouragement.  There is never any emphasis on spelling or grammar.  There is a briefing session and a debrief session for all volunteers before and after each workshop.

We also need volunteer illustrators

Some of our volunteers are also illustrators and draw the pictures to accompany the pupils’ stories.  If you are also a skilled illustrator please let us know.  This work is fast paced, a lot of fun and helps to bring the stories to life.

Live Tales operates a comprehensive child protection policy and all prospective volunteers are subject to reference checks and DBS checks.  We provide comprehensive training sessions for all Live Tales volunteers.

If you're interested in volunteering, please download a volunteer form and return it to livetales@live.org.uk and one of the team will be in touch soon. If you have any further questions that aren't answered here please email livetales@live.org.uk
